Attorney, Daniel W. Russo primarily practices law in the areas of criminal defense and professional and scholastic disciplinary matters. As the firm’s newest partner, Dan spends the majority of his days in either state or federal court representing individuals who have been arrested and charged with a variety of different crimes ranging from Driving While Intoxicated to Money Laundering. Dan is an experienced negotiator and an experienced litigator and has achieved numerous favorable results for Foley Griffin clients after either negotiating a favorable plea or securing a not guilty verdict after trial.
Dan holds the position of Dean to the Nassau Academy of Law and is the Chairman of the Criminal Law and Procedure Committee. Dan is also a past Editor-in-Chief of the Nassau Lawyer and has published several articles on topics ranging from the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment to criminal procedure in New York City courts to the criminal defense attorney’s obligations to clients during plea negotiations. He is also a member of the New York State Bar Association.
Dan began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York where he prosecuted misdemeanor and violent felony cases up to and including trial. During his four years in the Brooklyn DA’s Office, Dan tried a number of cases to verdict including assaults, DWI’s, drug sales, grand larceny and attempted murder. After the District Attorney’s Office, Dan was an associate at a law firm where he conducted insurance fraud investigations on behalf of insurance carriers. Prior to joining Foley Griffin Dan was also an associate at a Mineola law firm where he practiced criminal defense and real estate matters.
Dan grew up on the south-shore of Long Island and other than a nine-year residence in New York City, he has lived on Long Island his entire life. He is a proud product of Nassau County’s public school system. After completing high school, Dan went on to receive his Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science from Hofstra University in 1996. At Hofstra Dan excelled at both academics and athletics where he was a four-year member of the Hofstra Ice Hockey team and a member of the Dean’s List. During his senior year he was the recipient of a prestigious internship awarded by Hofstra University (in conjunction with American University in Washington D.C.) and spent a semester interning for a United States Congressmen on Capitol Hill.
After graduating from college Dan attended Fordham University School of Law where he received his Juris Doctor in 1999. During his tenure at Fordham Law, Dan achieved the position of Notes and Articles Editor of the Fordham Urban Law Journal and published a student article in the same publication his third year of law school.
Dan is admitted to practice law in New York State and the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He resides on the south shore of Long Island with his wife and his daughter.
